PULLING THE PLUG ON STANDBY POWER

Energy: Billions of devices sitting idle in "standby" mode waste vast amounts of energy. What can be done about it?

STRANGE though it seems, a typical microwave oven consumes more electricity powering its digital clock than it does heating food. For while heating food requires more than 100 times as much power as running the clock, most microwave ovens stand idle-in "standby" mode-more than 99% of the time. And they are not alone: many other devices, such as televisions, DVD players, stereos and computers also spend much of their lives in standby mode, collectively consuming a huge amount of energy. Moves are being made around the world to reduce this unnecessary power consumption, called "standby power".

Annual Conference of the IAEE
...to inspire, educate, and lead...

That's the goal of "Energy and Iowa's Environment", the theme of IAEE's conference, on October 4th, at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines.  Leading us with keynote presentations will be Shannon Fisk from the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Jack Dienna from the Geothermal National and International Initiative.  Other confirmed speakers are Sam Rashkin of the Energy Star for New Homes Program, and Quantec will be informing us on the Iowa Energy Assessment Project.

New this year is a pre-conference workshop on October 3 by EEBA's Houses That Work (HTW). Following several presentations of the basic program, IAEE is hosting advanced courses on insulationand air sealing, and marketing the energy efficient home.<
